The best science demands the best reagents. Today’s virology research is held back by old, inefficient, and inaccurate technologies for creating its most vital resource — its viruses. Nearly all of the virus stocks currently available for sale to biomedical research laboratories are produced through serial passage in cultured cells, and this is a big problem. Serial passage introduces a strong evolutionary pressure on the virus, and the virus mutates readily. This means that researchers worldwide are studying laboratory-adapted virus strains that are fundamentally different from their natural counterparts. Why does this matter?
