Currently, most virus stocks used in academic and commercial laboratories are generated by purchasing one vial of a virus strain from a commercial supplier, and then serially passaging that virus in permissive host cells. Small volumes of virus are provided by these suppliers at a high cost, and end users are often compelled to re-amplify their purchased viruses to generate adequate volumes for experimental use. In addition to the risk of introducing uncontrolled mutations in the virus stock during serial passaging, valuable time and money is wasted on this task.
